A Local's Guide to Nantucket: My Favorite Places on the Island

One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "What are your favorite places on Nantucket?"

Whether someone is planning their first Nantucket vacation, looking at Nantucket vacation rentals, or considering purchasing a home, I always tell them that the best way to experience the island is through the places locals love.

As a real estate agent, I spend my days helping clients find the perfect home, but outside of work, these are the places I return to again and again. They remind me why I love living here and why so many people decide to make Nantucket part of their lives.

If you're planning a visit, here are a few stops I never skip.

Start the Morning at Handlebar Coffee

There's no better way to begin the day than with a stop at Handlebar Coffee.

Whether I'm grabbing a quick latte before showings or meeting clients downtown, Handlebar has become one of my favorite places on the island. The coffee is consistently excellent, the garden patio is inviting, and it's the kind of place where you'll always run into familiar faces.

It's also the perfect starting point before exploring downtown's boutiques and historic streets.

Lunch at or, The Whale

When I'm in town around lunchtime, one of my favorite spots is or, The Whale.

Known for its fresh seafood, creative coastal cuisine, and inviting atmosphere, it's a restaurant that perfectly captures Nantucket's laid-back yet elevated dining scene. Whether you're stopping in for a leisurely lunch with friends or grabbing a bite between exploring downtown shops, every meal feels like a true island experience.

It's one of those places I find myself recommending time and time again to clients and visitors looking to experience some of the best local dining Nantucket has to offer.

Spend the Afternoon on the South Shore Beaches

Nantucket's beaches are one of the island's greatest treasures, and I'm especially drawn to the South Shore.

Whether you're visiting Cisco Beach, Surfside, or another stretch of coastline, you'll find beautiful dunes, rolling waves, and plenty of room to relax.

These beaches are perfect for surfing, long walks, or simply enjoying the ocean air. Even after living here, I never get tired of spending an afternoon by the water.

Visit Washashore Farm

Washashore Farm is one of Nantucket's hidden gems.

It offers a peaceful glimpse into the island's agricultural roots while showcasing fresh flowers, locally grown produce, and beautiful open landscapes.

It's the kind of place that reminds you to slow down and appreciate the simple moments. Every visit feels a little different depending on the season, making it worth returning to throughout the year.

End the Day at Mitchell's Book Corner

Before heading home, I love stopping into Mitchell's Book Corner.

Independent bookstores have a special charm, and this one has been a Nantucket favorite for generations. Whether you're searching for the perfect beach read, a Nantucket history book, or a thoughtful gift, you'll always find something worth bringing home.

There's something comforting about browsing the shelves before settling in for a relaxing evening.

Why These Places Matter

These aren't just great places to visit. They're part of what makes Nantucket feel like home.

The island is known for its beaches and beautiful homes, but it's the local businesses, welcoming community, and everyday experiences that truly define life here. Whether you're visiting for a week or thinking about making Nantucket your permanent or seasonal home, experiencing these local favorites offers a glimpse into what island life is really like.

As someone who helps buyers and renters navigate the Nantucket market every day, I always encourage clients to explore beyond the listings. Finding the right home is about more than the property itself. It's about discovering the places and routines that make you excited to call Nantucket home.
