Marion Roland Conley 5 reasons to love Nantucket

Siasconset is a Census Designated Place on the eastern end of Nantucket. Siasconset is a Wampanoag Algonquian term for “place of great bones.” Commonly known as 'Sconset, this village was settled in the 17th century and is full of the most charming 18th and 19th-century rose-covered cottages.

There is plenty to visit in and around 'Sconset. 'Sconset Beach is a wide sand beach known for heavy surf with the possibility of an undertow. That said, it is an easily accessible beach without the steep incline characteristic of other beaches.

With its distinctive red stripe, Sankaty Head Light is one of the most photographed lighthouses in New England. It has a fascinating history, including the fact that it was moved 405 feet to the northwest of its original location in 2007 due to erosion of the bluff. The lighthouse grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk.

For a picnic lunch or afternoon treat, check out 'Sconset Market. They offer a variety of groceries, baked goods, and old-fashioned soda fountain ice cream. Or visit Claudette's Sandwich Shop for an epic meatloaf sandwich!

For a beautiful walk, take the 'Sconset Bluff Walk a public footpath along the east shore bluffs. This path winds through private gardens and has beautiful scenic views.

According to Heart of Nantucket, "The 'Sconset Bluff Walk is part of the community thanks to William J. Flagg – a Nantucket resident and developer, who, in the late 1800s could see that ‘Sconset, with its towering bluffs and endless ocean scenery, would grow in value and exclusivity. To help offset that he built into the deeds of the house lots a public right of way which has been a gift to both locals and tourists alike."

'Sconset Nantucket is a beautiful place to consider buying or renting a home. With my strong, intimate knowledge of Nantucket and its many facets, I can help you find your forever home, summer home, or vacation rental in 'Sconset or elsewhere on the island.
